The outriggercanoe, the Vaka, has during
the centuries been the way for the Maories to go fishing outside the reef. The Vaka also
made it possible for brave or the expelled to seek new islands, new land. In the middle of
the 13 hundreds, during the medieval times while pest ravaged Europe, a fleet of Vakas
from Rarotonga sailed southeast, and seven of them reached shore and settled New Zealand
with maories. Te-Au-O-Tonga
is bigger and better equipped than the Vakas 650 years ago, but soon it will follow the
tracks from her ancestors to join the Milleniumcelebrations in New Zealand. |
