When you have some weeks to
spend in the Cook Islands, you should, besides visit Rarotonga, at least go to one or two
of the smaller islands in the southern group. We took a trip to Atiu and to Aitutaki

Aitutaki is the most visited island in the
Cooks besides Rarotonga. With its clear turquoise lagoon surrounded by many motus
(small islands) with white coral sand beaches, it is one of the pearls of the Pacific. We
saw Aitutaki with cloudy sky, rain, but also the beauty of bright blue sky and the sunset
on the beach of our lodge Sunny Beach. |

I the lagoon you can easily
find your own paradise. This beach is on the motu Akaiami where Air New Zealand about 50
years ago, started their tours to the Pacific by taking tourists by seaplanes, make a stop
here to fill fuel, serve the tourists lunch and let them "inhale" the beauty,
before they went on to Tahiti. Photographer
Jostein has handed over his camera. Below he is on Lagoon Cruise with
"one-Foot-Island" in the background. The lagoon is nice to snorkel in, but we
experienced that the amount of fish you could see is actually larger in parts of the
lagoon on Rarotonga. |

Nature is not
the only thing worth experiencing on Aitutaki. They have several dancing groups that are
as good as the best on Rarotonga. This little boy made the opening of a show by the Tiare
Aitutaki at Ralphie's Bar one Friday night in October. |
