The pig, tied up by one of his back feet, is a common sight in many peoples’ backyard. Even those that are not farmers, has often some animals like a pig, some chicken and grow papaya, coconuts and bananas.

Animal- and birdlife

The jungle on Rarotonga is called the quiet jungle. Elsewhere in the world you will have a variety of birds, here you have the silence. Butterflies you see everywhere and lizards who quickly hide under a root. and lots of mosquitoes if you don’t find a place where the wind blows.

Around the island you will hear allot of birdsounds, but you will soon find out they all come from the mynah-bird. If it doesn’t come from one of the many chickens that wanders around free. Around 4 o’clock in the morning the roosters starts.

So far we have seen one dog in a leach, so people who are afraid of dogs should probably not come here. The dogs’ freedom has resulted in a great and fascinating variety of dogs, often shortlegged with a strong, big body.
